sunset hill // Seattle, WA

Sunset Hill’s owners desired an update to their established garden.  The garden refresh addressed shrubs that had grown out of scale, added more summer flowers, and improved plant variety.  Through an editing process, we removed plants and added new ones.  In addition to the garden revisions, we added a water feature for ambiance and an arbor for shade and weather protection.

The arbor, designed in steel and wood, acknowledges the home’s details.  Half the arbor is covered by a solid roof, which provides weather-protecting cover for the seating area next to the existing fire place.  The arbor extends from the covered section with open lattice work to provide shade for the dining table.  The gridded mid-century design is visually clean and coordinates with the architecture of the house. The space under the arbor is gracious, but cozy, and creates an opportunity to spend the evening al fresco and enjoy the views across Puget Sound to the sunset.
